However, rimantadine and amantadine are only effective in treating Influenza A, and several strains of flu have already developed resistance to them. Thus, the two medicines are no longer recommended in the United States for treating the flu. Because the influenza virus can develop resistance to antiviral drugs, NIAID is working to find new and better treatments to fight the flu. These efforts include supporting the development and testing of the next generation of antiviral drugs.

For example, NIAID supported the initial Phase 1 clinical studies of peramivir, which was approved in by the Food and Drug Administration to treat flu infection in adults. This is the first neuraminidase inhibitor available in intravenous formulation, which is especially needed to deliver the effective drug dose to hospitalized patients who cannot take an oral or inhaled drug. NIAID has advanced the development and testing of additional next-generation neuraminidase inhibitors, as well as flu RNA polymerase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies targeting the flu surface protein hemagglutinin.

Three NIAID clinical trials are currently exploring the effectiveness of novel flu therapeutics in high-risk populations, including human plasma containing high levels of anti-flu antibodies, concentrated human immunoglobulin with high levels of anti-flu antibodies, and a cocktail of the three licensed flu antiviral medicines. There are several over-the-counter medicines available to you to help you combat the symptoms you feel while you are sick with the flu.

And some medicines treat multiple symptoms in a single product. When you first come down with the flu, rest is what will help give your body the energy it needs to fight the flu virus and flu symptoms, which is why rest is one of the go-to recommendations for people suffering from the flu. Stay at home and rest, especially during the first 24 hours after becoming ill.

Consuming enough fluids is another regularly recommended practice for people who have the flu. Flu viruses commonly spread through airborne droplets created when an infected person sneezes or coughs. Tamiflu is a prescription medication that is perhaps the most well-known antiviral drug that is used to combat the flu.

But it must be taken within a day or two of the symptoms beginning. Your healthcare provider is the best person to advise you. As discussed above, they may put you on antiviral drugs within the 48 hours of your symptoms, which can lessen the severity and duration of flu symptoms.

If you become very sick with the flu or are at a high risk of developing complications from the flu, call your healthcare provider.
